Willmar Public Schools District Staff Completed 4-day SMART Training

SMART (Stimulating Maturity through Accelerated Readiness Training) is a staff development program for producing higher levels of kindergarten and first-grade pre-academic readiness and early academic achievement by enriching many typical school activities with brain stimulation components.

SMART:

·         Is based on the concept that movement anchors learning.

·         Uses physical activity as the foundation to academic learning.

·         Integrates activities into the classroom, gymnasium, and playground.

·         Is embedded into the regular curriculum.

·         Uses age-appropriate activities that are fun and engaging to actively stimulate the brain.

·         Challenges and stimulates children by the activities that are incorporated into their daily academic routine.

·         Is a multi-sensory approach to learning based on brain research. This program develops physiological and neurological readiness skills essential to classroom success.

·         7 teachers and the Steps to a Healthier Willmar School Coordinator were trained in February 2007.

·         54 district staff completed the 4-day training from July 31 – August 3, 2007.  Staff represented classroom teachers, music teachers, English Language Learner teachers, special ed. staff, occupational and physical therapists, early childhood teachers, physical educators, and paraprofessionals.

Steps supported the training by assisting with grant writing for training funds, workshop implementation, providing healthy snacks during the training, promoting classroom implementation, providing 100 Frisbees for staff to use in implementing the program and Steps funds for 13 stability balls which complement program implementation.

Peaceful Playgrounds

Steps to a Healthier Willmar is supporting the Peaceful Playgrounds program at Lincoln Learning Center and Jefferson Elementary School.  Peaceful Playgrounds is:

  • A research based program designed to keep kids active during recess and teach conflict resolution. Research shows the program increases active play while reducing bullying and injuries.
  • A program that transforms the playground into a colorful arrangement of games kids love to play.  Designs are painted onto the existing playground and the activities help make recess time more positive and productive. Activities include hopscotch, four square, basketball, and handball just to name a few. There are nearly 100 activities to choose from.
  • A program that includes conflict resolution strategies, teacher training, and playground supervisor training.

For more information about the program, visit www.peacefulplaygrounds.com.

Classroom Pedometer Kits

Classroom pedometer kits were designed to increase awareness of daily activity and reinforce the concept that movement matters.

The kit contains 30 pedometers, lesson plans, walking logs, goal setting activities, and other resource materials.

Three classroom kits have been developed for district classroom use. They are available for check out and tracked through the science library of Willmar Public Schools.

Nutrition

Farm to School

Farm to School provides healthier options in the school cafeteria and through education that connects the food in the cafeteria to farms and health. Children can relate to how their food choices affect their own health, their family and the local farmer. Farm to School helps connect kids with the source of their food. And it teaches that their food choices matter to their health, to the environment, and to the people who grow their food.

During the 2008-2009 school year there will be a locally grown food featured once a month on the cafeteria menu. Examples include: apples, beans, bison, corn on the cob, garlic and wild rice.

Farm to School has been incorporated into the school wellness policy and enhances nutrition education and healthy food offerings in the cafeteria.
