The Delicious and Nutritious Youth Garden is published!
The Rochester Area Family Y’s campers are busy harvesting the fruits of their labor!  The Delicious and Nutritious Youth Garden has become a routine part of the Y summer camp where kids learn to be active and eat fresh, healthy food straight from their own garden.  They plant, nurture and learn about their garden with help from a master gardener and Public Health Nursing interns.  This garden project has recently received national attention by a study showing that kids who garden consume more fruits and vegetables.  Read more about this study published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, July 2009.

Walk-N-Wag

The Walk-N-Wag Program is a physical activity program that you can do with your dog.  It is a new program offered through select veterinarian offices and Steps to a Healthier Rochester.

Regular exercise is as important for your dog as it is for you.  When you walk with your dog, you both receive the benefits of increased energy, a healthy body weight, joint flexibility, and a longer healthier life together!  Research also shows that when people exercise with their pets, they are more likely to stick to a routine exercise regimen.

Signing up is easy!  Six veterinarian offices are participating:  Heritage Pet Hospital, Northern Valley Animal Clinic, Quarry Hill Park Animal Hospital, Byron Pet Clinic, Third Avenue Pet Hospital and Cascade Animal Medical Center.   You can stop into those offices to register and they’ll help you get started.  For more information about the Walk-N-Wag Program contact Jill Walters at 507-328-7526 or walters.jill@co.olmsted.mn.us

RColorful Corners - Visit the Newest Street Mural in Rochester!

It was the perfect day-the perfect day to paint a street! Wednesday, June 18th, over 200 painters, including parents, SOS volunteers, Northrop neighbors, Community Education staff, PACE mentors and mentees, community corrections representatives, local artist, Greg Wimmer, RNeighbors Board Members and staff spent the morning and afternoon painting the glorious goose that is found in between the Northrop Community Education building and Goose Egg Park (2nd Avenue and between 9th & 10th Street NW, on the one-way street going North).  For more information about the day (and a great picture of the mural) visit the RNeighbors Website

Without spending a single tax dollar, this grassroots project creates a safer and more livable neighborhood by:

  • Bringing neighbors together to create art
  • Reclaiming public space as a place for community connections
  • Calming traffic speed and improve pedestrian/biker safety

Stay tuned..... Another RColorful Corners mural is planned for Southwest Rochester in August!

Monitoring and Evaluation

An essential step in determining if the Steps initiatives are making a difference is through monitoring and evaluation.
