Steps to a Healthier Minnesota

The Steps to a HealthierUS five-year cooperative agreement program funds States, cities, and tribal entities to implement chronic disease prevention efforts focused on reducing the burden of diabetes, overweight, obesity, and asthma and addressing three related risk factors: physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and tobacco use.

In 2004, Minnesota was allocated $2.5 million annually to fund the Steps program in the communities of Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester, and Willmar from 2004-2009.

Steps to a HealthierMN is currently in its foruth year of funding.

 
Demographics of Project Area

The four communities that comprise Steps to a Healthier Minnesota have some of the state’s highest concentrations of populations that are disproportionately affected by chronic disease and associated risk factors. 

  • In Minneapolis public schools, 75% of students are students of color.
  • 58 languages are spoken in the homes of school students in Olmsted County.
  • St. Paul/Ramsey County has the largest Hmong population in the nation (more than 24,000).
  • Willmar has a growing Somali population of approximately 1,000 and it has the third largest Latino population in Minnesota.
